The MLB World Series is a seven game
series pitting the National League champion versus the American
League champion. Home field advantage is now decided by which ever
league wins the always exciting Major League Baseball All-Star
Game. Each series tends to be extremely exciting year after year.
The World Series (a.k.a. October
Classic, The Series) first appeared in 1903 in a match between the
Boston Americans (now Red Sox) from the American League and the
Pittsburgh Pirates of the National League. The Sox won the series
five games to three, giving credibility to the American League (The
American League was a newly founded division). The following year,
the Red Sox once more made the Series but opponents New York Giants
refused to play on grounds that the American League was inferior and
that there were no formalized rules for the championship. Quick to
respond, the MLB instituted the new World Series in 1905 as a
permanent fixture. The leagues would “meet annually in a series of
games for the professional baseball championship of the world.

2008 World Series -
Phillies Vs. Tampa Bay Rays
Tampa Bay Rays left
no doubt they were World Series-worthy, after all. The young Rays
completed a stunning run to their first pennant, holding off the
defending champion Boston Red Sox 3-1 Sunday night behind Matt
Garza's masterful pitching in Game 7 of the AL championship
series.

Phillies will open the World Series on the road - against the
Tampa Bay Rays, the team with the best home record in the
majors this year. The
Phillies (92-70) overtook the Mets in September for the second
successive season to claim the NL East title.
The Philadelphia Phillies get their first crack at winning a
World Series since 1993! The fighting Phillies emerged from
the playoffs as the National League Champions, ready to take
on the winner of the American League playoffs in what promises
